Summer vacations are boring....specially if you have nothing to do....and the fact that it has been raining for many days continuously....(and you do not know when the rain gods will show their mercy)....one of the effective ways to waste time is facebook.....

A NEW BEGINNING....

Right.....so it has been a long time since I have posted anything new....my last post was on 7th of June 2009....frankly speaking I did not get enough time for writing blogs....
Now almost two years later....I finally opened my blog today.....and find that people have been viewing and reading my blog....I do not consider myself to be a very good blogger.....I did not expect so much traffic on my website....But going by the stats I have decided to start blogging again.....This is not the only reason for me for me to start blogging.....
My summer vacations have started and to tell u the truth.....summer vacations become boring after a few days....time just does not seem to pass....then there are power cuts, mosquitoes, damp walls etc.....now I could have gone out with my friends but sadly enough there are no places to hang around in burnpur....plus it has been raining for a couple of days now....the only companion I have right now is my laptop....so I have decided to start blogging.....
APART FROM THE ABOVE MENTIONED EXCUSES.....I FEEL THAT THE REASON FOR ME TO START WRITING BLOGS AGAIN IS THAT I LIKE WRITING BLOGS....NO MATTER HOW BAD I MAY BE AT WRITING THEM....... :)

SPS REUNION '09 (DAY 2)

The second day of the reunion was not that eventful. I reached there at 8:10 a.m. I thought I was late. I later found out that actually I had reached earlier than most of my friends. The school was empty so I thought why not take a few snaps. I had my camera with me. I took many photographs of the school buildings and the gardens. Souvik arrived at around 8:30 a.m. I called Eshaan who said he was on the way. I and Souvik decided to go to the swimming pool area. We sat there for fifteen minutes. We were just going out of the swimming pool area when Eshaan arrived. I started talking with him. Later Roni and Riku came. They went for a swim in the pool. Those who were in the swimming pool were playing water polo. It was good to watch them. Many times the ball went out of the swimming pool area and landed on the field. They had to go to fetch it in there costumes. We stayed there till about 10:00 o' clock.
We then decided to have our breakfast which was being served. The breakfast was simple,light and nice. The menu for the breakfast was

The breakfast was not sufficient for us and we decided to go to Thomas Uncle's canteen. I,Eshaan and Shubham Bhowmik went there. We drank cold-drinks and had vegetable cutlet. The cold-drink was given to us in a small glass which Eshaan observed looked more like Takila. While returning from the canteen we met Thomas uncle who was very pleased to meet us. We then went to the auditorium where the awards ceremony was to start. I bought a t-shirt. It is a white colour Levi Strauss Signature t-shirt with an SPS logo on it. Soon thereafter the awards ceremony started. Many of the grade-d staffs like Xavier uncle, Thomas Uncle etc. were honoured and we cheered them. Later teachers were also given lifetime contribution award. Many of the old teachers who had retired had also come for the award ceremony. Some of them were:

etc.
Brother Beddoe also had come. Kingshuk da hosted the ceremony. The ceremony was broadcasted live over the internet. Mrs. Seema Paul and Miss. Chitralekha Majumdar were among the others to recieve this award. We met Brother Beddoe during the ceremony. He was pleased to meet us. He said the work done by alumni's for the school was great. He also was quite sad about the depleting numbers Irish brothers in India and said only 10 Irish brothers were now left in India. He said most young brothers who were now recruited were from India wanted to reach to the poor sections of the society rather than stay in schools as brothers.
When the program ended. We decided to pay another visit to Uncle Thomas' Canteen. This time we had Chicken cutlet and cold-drinks. Turjo,Debarun,Shubham and Dipan also joned us in the canteen. Later we played basketball. Thereafter we had our lunch. The lunch was very good.
The menu for the lunch was:

After the lunch I,Turjo,Dipan,Shubham and Debarun went to our old classrooms and took some photographs there. We then roamed around in the school for sometime. Eshaan meanwhile went for the historical tour of the school and reunion classes.
I was feeling very tired that day so I decided to return home early. I came back at 4:00p.m.

SPS REUNION '09(Day one)

Because my summer vacations got extended I had the opportunity to go the St. Patrick's alumni reunion held in my school. This reunion was open to the all the Christian Brother Schools in Asansol namely

4>Loreto Convent
I reached there at 7:55 a.m. .The assembly had just begun. I saw my friends(Raunaq,Deba,Babai,Eshaan,Turjo,Shubham,Dipan) standing at the assembly ground. Deba was the first to shake hands with me soon after others followed with the common question I have been tired of hearing "Ki yaar kamon aachish bol","Akhon kothaye porchis rey" and "Tor branch taa ki".
After the assembly I went with them towards the auditorium. On the way I met Mrinal Sir wearing a bright yellow t-shirt. He was angry on me as he was calling me on my mobile but I had not responded. I told him that my sim card was not working and I had replaced it with another one. He said to me waving his hands near my face as he always does "Chaar tor dara kichchu hobe naa." He then told me he had tried to contact me because one of his students was joining my University. Next I went near the auditorium where I met Stephen Lazarus Sir. He was pleased to meet us. He was in good mood. When a student wished him good morning he did not respond. This displeased the boy who wished him again and this time Mr. Lazarus shouted at him "I am not deaf."We all laughed at that. Another boy came and asked us whether we wanted to give our names for the quiz to which some of us obliged. We asked Mr. Lazarus why was he not participating with us he said the team taking him would get marks in the negative but he said he would be commentating in the cricket match which was to be held after the quiz and asked Raunaq to help him with the commentary. Our talks with Mr. Lazarus drifted from college life to ragging and then Mr. Tims etc.Our other topic of discussion was that why had the turnout been so low. Raunaq remarked that many other ex students were here but they just would not come. Mr.Lazarus told us "you fellows must go and drive out all those who are sitting in there home." We were talking with Mr. Lazarus when Eshaan came and wished him. Then Soumyabrata and Debanjan joined in. Deba said to Mr.Lazarus that one alumni had his passout batch registered as 1930. Mr.Lazarus said that he must be about 90 yrs. old now. Soon after we saw an old person who was very old but was an alumni. I pointed out this was the man who was 90yrs. old. Mr. Lazarus then went away I then too gave my name for the quiz and waited for it to start. During this time we also got our passes but we foolishly forgot to collect our receits back which was fortunately later found on the table otherwise this would not have been a long post. We saw that Suhel da our quiz master coming. I recognised him as he had previously conducted quizzes in our school.
We were called for the quiz.I met my team partners there were four of us me,a tall dada whose name I keep forgetting, Anindya Dada and Souvik. We then went onto the podium as our names were called and we were cheered. Anindya I learnt had come all the way from Pune to attend this reunion and had arrived on the same day itself. He belonged to the '81 or 82' batch. He was very energetic and lively. He got angry when I called him Uncle. He took us to the backstage to tell us that we would discuss the answers before saying them and I was to take the call. Soon after that we gave our team name bindass on his sugestion. Anindya's theory behind the team name was that even if we were not able to answer any question we had the ass in our team name. Though the truth is he gave almost all the answers from our side.
The quiz started with suhel da asking us questions on a variety of topics. What I liked about this quiz was it got you think. Like the following question in the name the ad round asked you to name the company whose ad was this

We had our breakfast afterwards. The food was really good and the menu for the breakfast was

After the quiz and breakfast I was wandering around while my other friends went to see the cricket match. I suddenly heard Mr.Lazarus commenting "Yeh haath mujhe de de thakur." I at once new Rajdeep one of my friend Ronodweep's brother had come to bat. He was brilliant to watch as he smashed every bowler to every corner of the ground. His sixes were great to watch. The present school team scored 125 runs in their quota of 10 overs mainly due to the power hitting of Rajdeep. Next it was the alumni's turn to bat. It was a tall order but Rajdeep was upto the task. He gave away 6 sixes in one over by bowling at the same area every time and getting hit for a six. Though the alumni's had a few hiccups in the later stages of the match due to a hatrick of wickets but the alumni's won the match.

Next I met many of our teachers. Some of them recognised me. Mr. B.K. Pandey was pleased to meet me he said "Han Han Han Manish Sarkhel I recognise woh tumhi ho jisne ICSE mein 88 laya tha."(I was surprised to hear that)

I met Mr. Ambrose who had retired but came for the reunion. He was pleased to meet us.

I also met Nancy Bearder who said to me "But ofcourse I remember you I don't know your name but definitely remember your face."

Next I met Mrinal Sir who was as usual happy spotted coupons in my hand and said "Eitaaaaa kiiiii" I told him it was the coupons and then he said in his own style ,"Khawa Dawa korliii reeein"

I also met P.K Daan sir.

I also met Lazarus sir for the second time this time we had a long chat. We asked him whether Mr. Gunnion would be here for the reunion or not to which he replied "He was there last week in school." We were very surprised and excited. He later corrected himself to say it was Mr. Tims not Mr. Gunnion. Soumyabrata asked him why his hair was becoming white to which he replied "Tum logon ka moustache nikal ata hai tab hum logon ka bal bhi safed ho jata hai". Thomas uncle also came and said "Yeh log kitna bada ho gaya". To which sir replied "Yeh logon ko bada hote dekhkar lagta hai hum log buda ho gaya."
Turjo asked him why he had not changed his legend scooter. He told us because it was a legend.

We had our lunch in the meantime. It was as good as the breakfast. The menu was

I rested at the poolside for sometime before finally returning home at 4:00p.m.

One of my friends Swarup showed me this trick which helps you to shutdown windows in a jiffy(I tried it in win xp). I was quite impressed by it.

1: press ctrl+alt+del

2:taskmanager opens up
in the menu goto shutdown

3:press ctrl+turn off from the menu together

your computer wiil now shut down very fast.

PROBLEMS FACED BY ME IN UBUNTU

Though Ubuntu is very user friendly and using Ubuntu has a lot of benefits(Which are stated in another post) but following are the problems faced by me while using it on my 1 year old Toshiba satelliteL300 laptop.

1. The battery lasts for just more than 2.30 hours in xtreme powersave mode for ubuntu while in windows the battery lasts for more than 3.30 hours when I watching a movie.

While I am reading pdf documents sometimes the battery lasts in windows for more than 4hrs in windows while in ubuntu it lasts for just more than 3hrs. The same is the case with typing in documents.

2. The screen flickers at startup though this problem as is claimed is going to be solved in the coming version of Ubuntu Karmic Koala to be released on 29th October 2009.

3:The startup time though lesser than windows is going to be further reduced to just about 3 secs. in new version of Ubuntu Karmic Koala by making the loading of the Grub as optional and quick.

TO CONNECT TO BROADBAND

Many like me are finding it difficult to connect to broadband using the DSL Modem.

Here is a way to connect to it.

1.goto to accessories

2.goto terminal

3.type sudo pppoeconf

4.type your password

5.follow the onscreen instructions (just go on pressing yes)

6.enter your broadband username and password when asked

7.Then go on following the instructions

after finishing you should be able to connect to the net

to see whether your internet connection is working properly type plog. If the connection pinges it is working

I haven't been able to find a way to disconnect it though.

The command poff is actually assigned for this purpose but doesn't seem to work in this case.

WINE SOFTWARE

Just like most Linux software Wine is also a free software. The basic advantage of wine is that it can make windows applications run on linux. Hence by installing wine you can run most of your .exe applications on it and you won't need to dual boot.

Wine was developed by Bob Amstdat(the initial project leader) and Eric Youngdale in 1993 as a way to run windows program on linux. Wine actually uses Windows API to make its programs which can actually be quite time consuming and faulty beacause Windows API has many incorrect documentation.

WINE stands for Wine Is Not an Emulator.

Installing wine is simple as is the case with other Linux applications.

1.go to accessories

2.go to terminal

3.type in the terminal

sudo apt-get install wine

rest will be taken care by linux only you need to have an internet connection for the software to be downloaded.

pwd: The pwd command will allow you to know in which directory you're locate.

ls: The ls command will show you the files in your current directory.

cd: The cd command will allow you to change directories.

To navigate into the root directory, use "cd /"
To navigate to your home directory, use "cd" or "cd ~"
To navigate up one directory level, use "cd .."
To navigate to the previous directory (or back), use "cd -"

cp: The cp command will make a copy of a file for you.

mv: The mv command will move a file to a different location or will rename a file.

rm: Use this command to remove or delete a file in your directory.

mkdir: The mkdir command will allow you to create directories.

man: The man command is used to show you the manual of other commands.
E.G. man cd
will show you a manual of cd commands

df: The df command displays filesystem disk space usage for all partitions.

free: The free command displays the amount of free and used memory in the system.

top: The top command displays information on your Linux system, running processes and system resources, including CPU, RAM & swap usage and total number of tasks being run. To exit top, press "q".

uname -a: The uname command with the -a option prints all system information, including machine name, kernel name & version, and a few other details. Most useful for checking which kernel you're using.

lsb_release -a: The lsb_release command with the -a option prints version information for the Linux release you're running

ifconfig reports on your system's network interfaces.

"adduser newuser" command will create a new general user called "newuser" on your system, and to assign a password for the newuser account use "passwd newuser".
